Forest fires : Fears rise during the summer

As summer approaches and temperatures rise significantly, fears of a repeat of the forest fires that have swept across Morocco in recent years are on the rise, according to a parliamentarian from the Istiqlal Unity and Equilibrium Group in the House of Representatives.

In this context, MP Hussein Ait Olhayan, a member of the Istiqlalist Unity and Equilibrium Group in the House of Representatives, warned of the danger of forest fires, calling on the government to take the necessary preventive and proactive measures to minimize their occurrence.

The same parliamentarian directed an inquiry to Mohamed Siddiqui, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, about strengthening the protection of forests from forest fires, asking him to reveal the plans and programs that the ministry intends to take to confront this phenomenon, including the preventive and deterrent measures followed.

The MP emphasized that if the government does not take the necessary measures, forest fires will become an inevitable reality, resulting in significant environmental and economic losses.

During the 2023 season, Morocco witnessed 466 forest fires that affected an estimated 6,426 hectares, with secondary grasses and seasonal plants accounting for 35% of the area affected by these fires.

This phenomenon is attributed to a combination of factors, the most important of which are high temperatures, low air humidity and dry winds.

In light of these concerns, various concerned parties, including the government and civil society, call for concerted efforts to protect forests from fires, through awareness and education programs, strengthening means of monitoring and surveillance, and providing the necessary capabilities for rapid intervention in the event of any fire.
