Polisario Blocks MINURSO Logistics Convoy in Serious Escalation

Sahara: In a grave and unprecedented escalation, elements affiliated with the Polisario Front prevented the passage of trucks belonging to the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) east of the defense wall on Monday.

These vehicles were heading towards the locality of Agounit via the Aousserd axis, east of the defense wall, where a MINURSO base is located. This action was perceived as a “dangerous development,” according to the Atlantic Observatory for Defense and Armament.

While these trucks were transporting logistical equipment destined for the UN base in Agounit, their journey was abruptly interrupted by Polisario elements, without the separatist front providing any official explanation for the motives behind this unprecedented act.

The Observatory also reported that members of the front fired live bullets at a UN patrol near the Mauritanian-Moroccan border. Faced with explicit threats of liquidation, the UN mission had to turn back.

“This worrying development comes in a context where calls to classify the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization are multiplying,” the Observatory emphasized.

Calls to Classify the Front as a “Terrorist Organization”

Indeed, following US Senator Joe Wilson’s call to classify the Polisario as a terrorist organization, former MP and Deputy Secretary General of the French Les Républicains party, Pierre-Henri Dumont, appealed to Emmanuel Macron in this regard on Monday.

The Deputy Mayor of Marck and Vice-President of Grand Calais is calling on France to adopt a firm stance against an entity supported by Algeria and accused of collusion with Iran and Hezbollah.

On X (formerly Twitter), Dumont stated: “The Hudson Institute sheds new light on the Polisario. Used by Algeria and Iran, allied with Hezbollah, this movement threatens regional peace and security. France must call things by their name: the Polisario is a terrorist organization.”

Separatist Anger Against MINURSO

This incident occurs a few days after the presentation to the Security Council of a report by Alexander Ivanko, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara and head of MINURSO.

In his report, Ivanko denounced the “persistent obstacles” imposed by the Polisario, including hindering the transport of humanitarian and technical equipment and refusing to hold meetings with mission officials. He did, however, commend the “cooperation and facilities” offered by the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces.

This new obstruction raises fears of an intensification of tensions on the ground, at a time when the UN and major international powers are calling for respect for the 1991 ceasefire and the creation of a climate conducive to the resumption of the political process, based on the Moroccan autonomy initiative.
