Banque Populaire Issues Warning: A Wave of Cyber Fraud Hits Morocco and Urgent Alerts to Protect Your Accounts

Banque Populaire has issued an electronic warning to its customers in Morocco, highlighting a significant increase in attempted cyber fraud. The bank stressed the importance of remaining vigilant and adopting strict security measures to protect bank accounts and personal information from growing threats.

In its warning message, the bank stated that phishing is currently the most prominent threat, with scammers impersonating official or trusted institutions in order to trick victims into revealing sensitive information such as passwords, access codes, and banking details.

Banque Populaire pointed out several red flags that may indicate suspicious emails, such as grammatical and spelling mistakes, or messages that urge the recipient to act quickly without proper verification. The bank also warned against unusual requests involving banking information, emphasizing that user awareness of these signs is a key step in preventing cyber fraud.

This alert comes at a time when Morocco is experiencing a surge in cybersecurity threats, as described by experts. In recent weeks, the database of the National Social Security Fund (CNSS) was hacked, resulting in the leak of sensitive information concerning around 2.5 million members and 500,000 businesses. A report by the cybersecurity firm Kaspersky revealed over 6.4 million phishing attempts recorded in Morocco during 2024, in addition to the blocking of 1.6 million malicious files. The report also noted that hackers specifically targeted the tourist season between May and July, using fake offers related to hotel bookings and travel tickets.

Through this warning, Banque Populaire reaffirmed its commitment to raising digital awareness among its clients, urging them to adopt safe practices while using the internet to protect digital assets and personal information from escalating cyber threats.
