Amid growing concerns over the spread of lymphatic tuberculosis in some Moroccan regions, the National Office for Food Safety (ONSSA) has urged citizens to exercise caution when purchasing milk products. The office emphasized the importance of verifying the source of the milk and ensuring it is licensed and carries a clear identification number (label).
Dr. Hicham Addelbo, Head of the Health Safety Department at ONSSA, explained in an awareness video shared through the office’s official platforms that milk from licensed production units undergoes precise heat treatment capable of eliminating all bacteria. Additionally, it is regularly monitored by veterinary services of ONSSA.
On the other hand, Dr. Addelbo warned against consuming milk and dairy products from unknown or unmonitored sources, stressing the potential health risks. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring all health-related information is available on product labels before consumption.
Coinciding with this warning, Member of Parliament Salwa El Baradi from the Justice and Development Party expressed concern over the rising number of lymphatic tuberculosis cases, noting that infections have been recorded in groups previously not considered at risk for this disease. She suggested a link between these infections and the consumption of meat and animal products not subject to the necessary health monitoring.
In a written question directed to the Minister of Health and Social Protection, El Baradi called for immediate coordination between the Ministries of Health and Agriculture to contain any potential outbreaks of the disease. She pointed out the weakness of awareness campaigns about the risks of tuberculosis and the limited monitoring of milk and meat distribution chains.
El Baradi also urged the government to disclose the measures taken in this regard, whether related to joint monitoring mechanisms with veterinary services or epidemiological investigations, emphasizing the importance of strengthening health safety to protect Moroccan consumers from serious health consequences.
