Sofiane Rahimi achieved a historic milestone at the Paris 2024 Olympics, becoming the all-time top scorer for the Moroccan national team with a total of eight goals, earning the title of top scorer in this edition of the Olympics.
Rahimi showcased remarkable performance by scoring in every match the Moroccan team played, starting from the group stage match against Argentina to the third-place playoff against Egypt.
He leads the scoring chart at the Paris 2024 Olympics, surpassing both Firmin Lopez (Spain) and Philippe Mateta (France), who each scored four goals. Marcelo Fernandez (Paraguay) and Ibrahim Adel (Egypt) are tied in third place with three goals each.
With this achievement, Rahimi equaled the record set by Argentine Carlos Tevez at the Athens 2004 Olympics and also marked a historic milestone as the highest-scoring Arab player in a single edition of the Olympics, matching the record set by Egyptian Mustafa Riyad in 1964.
Sofiane started his scoring journey in this edition of the Olympics by netting two goals against Argentina in the first round of the group stage. He then added a third goal against Ukraine, followed by a fourth goal against Iraq.
His brilliance continued in the knockout stages, where he scored his fifth goal against the United States in the quarterfinals, followed by a sixth goal against Spain in the semifinals. He capped off his performance with two more goals against Egypt, leading Morocco to a bronze medal.
Before Rahimi, Ahmed Faras, the winner of the African Golden Ball in 1975, was the all-time top scorer for the Moroccan national team in the Olympics with three goals scored against Malaysia in the 1972 Munich edition. With this achievement, Sofiane Rahimi writes his name in golden letters in the history of Moroccan football.
