In a strong official response, Hicham Chakir, representative of Moroccans living abroad in the Benelux region, firmly rejected recent statements made by Belgian politician Georges-Louis Bouchez. Bouchez had accused members of the Moroccan diaspora of “illegally benefiting” from the Belgian social welfare system.
Chakir criticized the exclusionary rhetoric, stating that such comments are “unworthy of a politician who claims to defend republican values.” He added, “Accusing Moroccans of owning properties in Morocco and defrauding the social system is a blatant generalization driven purely by electoral motives.”
In a statement obtained by Fes News, Chakir emphasized that this type of discourse “fuels hatred and division within Belgian society.” He stressed that “the majority of Moroccans living in Belgium work hard, contribute to the economy, respect the law, and are an integral part of the social fabric.”
Chakir also rejected what he called “the scapegoating of the Moroccan diaspora to mask the failures of government policies or to fill gaps in political discourse,” urging the Belgian politician to “immediately stop making discriminatory statements that could inflame tensions and jeopardize social cohesion.”
He concluded by affirming that “Moroccans in Belgium deserve appreciation and respect just like any other citizen. It’s time for political leaders to rise above divisive rhetoric and focus on addressing real issues with responsibility.”
