A powerful earthquake struck the Silivri area on the Sea of Marmara near the Turkish city of Istanbul on Wednesday morning. According to the official Anadolu Agency, the quake measured 6.2 on the Richter scale.
Residents of Istanbul and several surrounding regions felt the tremor, which caused widespread panic. As of now, however, no casualties or material damage have been reported, according to Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.
In response, the Turkish Ministry of Interior announced that teams from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) have launched intensive field operations to assess the situation and inspect the safety of infrastructure in the affected area.
All scenarios remain open as the authorities await technical updates regarding the earthquake, particularly concerning its epicenter and depth.
Turkish authorities have called on citizens to remain calm and follow official instructions, as aftershocks are possible in the coming hours.
