The unprecedented prices of sacrificial animals during Eid al-Adha triggered a wave of anger and discontent in Morocco, where a female parliamentarian criticized the government, calling for the resignation of the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forestry, Mohamed Siddiqui, against the background of the ministry’s “failure” to address the high prices and the absence of effective solutions.
The same parliamentarian accused the government of depriving millions of Moroccans of the holy rite, noting that many employees “declared bankruptcy” due to their inability to buy an Eid sacrifice, and emphasized that “greed and lack of control” contributed greatly to the exacerbation of the crisis.
The occasion of Eid al-Adha, according to parliamentarian Lubna Saghiri, revealed the “ineffectiveness” of the She pointed the finger of blame at the “snatchers” who she considered to be the main culprits of the “rocketing prices.” Followers called for an end to the activity of snatchers.
The government’s plans will not work as long as these “exploiters” indirectly benefit from any subsidies provided to farmers and importers.
In a related context, the parliamentarian from the Socialist Party strongly criticized the federal opposition’s subsidy policy, stressing that it does not include important segments of society, such as taxi drivers and other simple professionals, and considered that “a self-respecting government” should have resigned after the “disaster” of Eid al-Adha.
A number of parliamentarians denounced the “exclusion of a significant percentage of Moroccan citizens” from benefiting from direct support, due to the “unfair conditions” of the index, which deprives many people from the rural world of this right.
The deputies called for a reconsideration of the criteria of the socio-economic index and the implementation of measures to ensure that needy families receive the necessary support.
