Visa applications worldwide have seen a marked rise in rejection rates in recent years, amid tightening immigration policies and growing security and economic concerns in a number of countries, making it more difficult to obtain a visa than in the past.
According to recent international reports, certain types of visas, particularly student visas, have recorded record rejection rates, reaching approximately 35% in the United States in 2025—the highest level in a decade—with these rejections concentrated primarily in African and Asian countries.
Data also showed that rejection rates vary significantly depending on the applicant’s nationality, ranging from less than 2% in some countries to more than 70% in others, reflecting the decisive influence of the “country of origin” factor in acceptance or rejection decisions.
In the same vein, major countries such as Canada recorded high rejection rates of nearly 52% for student visas, compared to 41% in the United States, while rates remain relatively lower in European countries such as France.
Observers believe this global rise stems from a set of common factors, foremost among them stricter requirements for proving financial capacity, the need to provide strong justifications for returning to the country of origin, and increased scrutiny of documents and personal files.
Security and immigration policies also play a pivotal role, as several countries have adopted stricter measures, including bank account reviews and tracking applicants’ digital records, in addition to concerns about irregular migration or overstaying legal residency.
Among other factors, growing pressure on immigration systems stands out as a result of the rising number of applications worldwide, with millions of people seeking to study or work abroad each year, prompting countries to adopt stricter selection criteria.
Reports also point to clear regional disparities, with countries in the “Global South” recording higher rejection rates compared to Europe and North America, sparking growing debate about the fairness of visa systems and the extent to which they rely on merit versus geographic criteria.
Against this backdrop, thousands of students and professionals around the world face growing challenges in pursuing their academic and professional goals, amid calls to reform visa systems and make them more transparent and equitable.
