De Mistura Settles the Debate: The Referendum is Over and Moroccan Autonomy is the Realistic Solution to the Conflict in Western Sahara

During his recent visit to Tindouf, UN envoy Stefano de Mistura delivered a firm message to the Polisario Front, affirming that the option of a referendum as a solution to the Western Sahara conflict is definitively over. De Mistura emphasized that autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only realistic solution recognized and supported by major global powers such as the United States, France, Spain, as well as influential members of the UN Security Council.

He added that the Polisario leadership’s rejection of this approach reflects their full alignment with the Algerian stance, which has increased their international isolation. In this context, the United Nations itself is witnessing a clear shift toward adopting autonomy as the final and established framework for resolving the manufactured conflict.

The international community is closely watching the upcoming Security Council decision, which is expected to reaffirm the autonomy initiative as the sole credible and reliable solution to end the protracted dispute over Western Sahara, thereby ensuring regional stability and promoting peace and development.
