The residents of several villages near a road route in the Maghraoua Commune, Taza Province, are suffering daily due to the heavy dust caused by the construction works of the road development project linking Bou Saoud Village and Tayrourt Village via Oulad Afraiven Village, spanning 16 kilometers. This project is being carried out as part of the program to reduce territorial and social disparities.
Funded by the Ministry of Interior through the Rural Development Fund, with a budget of approximately 23 million and 335 thousand dirhams, the project is overseen by the company “QUALITE DU SUD SARL” along with technical partners and monitoring offices. It was expected to help break the isolation of the area and improve the living conditions of the residents. However, the ongoing construction has caused negative environmental and health impacts, most notably the spread of dense dust due to the company’s machinery moving at high speeds on the dirt road.
According to a local source who spoke to Fes News, several residents of one of the nearby villages have suffered respiratory illnesses from daily inhalation of the dust. Additionally, one citizen reported that the person in charge of the machinery repeatedly refused to respond to the residents’ requests to spray water on the road to reduce the harmful effects.
The residents confirm that the continuation of this situation worsens their suffering and threatens the health of children and the elderly. They are calling on local authorities and those responsible for the project to intervene urgently and oblige the contractor to comply with environmental safety conditions, in order to protect the neighboring population and their natural surroundings.
