Breaking: Qatar Suspends its Mediation in Gaza Negotiations Until Further Notice

Reuters news agency reported, quoting a well-informed official, that Qatar has decided to suspend its mediation efforts for a ceasefire in Gaza, conditioning its return on both Hamas and Israel showing “genuine willingness” to return to the negotiating table.

The official explained that Doha has concluded that Hamas’s political office in Qatar “no longer serves its purpose,” noting that Qatari authorities have notified all concerned parties – Hamas, Israel, and the U.S. administration – of their decision.

However, a Hamas leader denied, in statements to Agence France-Presse (AFP), that the movement had received any request to leave Qatar or close its office in Doha.

These developments come after months of intensive diplomatic efforts led by Qatar, alongside Egypt and the United States, since the beginning of the assault on Gaza on October 7, 2023. Although these efforts succeeded in reaching a temporary truce agreement in November 2023, which saw an exchange of prisoners and detainees, subsequent attempts have failed.

It is worth noting that the ongoing war on the Gaza Strip has resulted in the death of more than 40,000 Palestinians, in addition to widespread destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe in the region.
