The Regional Directorate of Health and Social Protection of the Rabat-Salé-Quneitra region announced the registration of a series of cases of methanol poisoning, during the period from 6 pm on Monday, June 3 to 8 am on Wednesday, June 4, 2024.
According to a press release issued by the Directorate, these shocking cases were recorded in the Sidi Allal El Tazi level community of the Kenitra region, where the ingestion of this dangerous substance affected 114 people, causing them to suffer serious poisoning complications.
These cases have claimed the lives of eight people, with seven deaths recorded at the Idrissi Regional Hospital Center in Kenitra, while another death was recorded at the Zoubair Skiraj Hospital in Souk El Arba El Gharb.
Of the injured, 81 are being treated at various hospital centers in the region, including 28 at the Idrissi Regional Hospital Center in Kenitra, three of whom are in critical condition in the resuscitation unit. Thirty-eight people were discharged from the hospital after their condition improved.
In a similar context, there were 40 other cases at the Moulay Youssef Regional Center in Rabat, including two who were referred to the resuscitation center at the Ibn Sina University Hospital in Rabat, as a result of complications from ingesting this dangerous substance, while 20 cases are undergoing blood purification at the same hospital institution.
The Directorate mobilized all medical and nursing staff, and provided all the necessary means and capabilities to provide care and medical care for the injured, in cooperation with local authorities and concerned authorities, and coordinated with local authorities to launch an alert to search for other cases that may have visited health centers and hospitals at the regional level.
The Directorate calls on the citizens of the Quneitra region to report any similar case and go directly to the nearest health institution, to receive appropriate care and avoid any serious health complications.
