Morocco – Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation and first vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), took part on October 8, 2026, in the proceedings of CAF’s strategic conference held in Cape Verde. The event brings together representatives of the 54 member national associations to discuss prospects for developing African football, strengthening governance and preparing for upcoming international competitions. It comes as CAF president Patrice Motsepe renewed the continental body’s support for Gianni Infantino ahead of the 2027 election for the presidency of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).
The conference is being held from October 7 to 9, with the participation of national association presidents, presidents of zonal unions and members of the CAF Executive Committee, alongside national team coaches, technical officials and international experts. Its objective is to establish a roadmap for developing African football both on and off the pitch.
The opening session was attended by the president of the Republic of Cape Verde, Janira Hopffer Almada, CAF president Patrice Motsepe and FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Discussions focus on strengthening the capacities of national associations, improving administrative and sporting management, and establishing sustainable structures capable of supporting competitive performance over the long term.
The conference proceedings include closed-door meetings among representatives of member associations to discuss ways to improve governance, transparency and management within African football bodies. They also include an assessment of African national teams’ performances at the 2026 World Cup, with the aim of drawing technical and organizational lessons in preparation for upcoming competitions, particularly the 2030 World Cup.
For the first time, an assessment of African national teams’ performances at the World Cup finals has become a major focus of a strategic meeting dedicated to developing football across the continent. Proceedings on Friday, October 9, are expected to focus on analyzing the teams’ technical performances, with the participation of Arsène Wenger, FIFA’s Chief of Global Football Development, and several technical staff members, including national team coach Mohamed Ouahbi.
Alongside these issues, Patrice Motsepe renewed CAF’s support for the FIFA president in a speech delivered on Thursday before African association officials and in the presence of Gianni Infantino, ahead of the election scheduled for March 18, 2027, in the Moroccan capital, Rabat.
Motsepe stated that African associations had already unanimously decided to support Infantino’s candidacy, calling on those present to express their backing. Representatives of all 54 associations and members of the CAF Executive Committee responded by standing and applauding the FIFA president.
In the same context, the CAF president emphasized the importance of governance, transparency and ethics within football institutions. He called for any allegations or disputes to be addressed through official channels and the relevant committees, in accordance with the procedures established within FIFA.
The renewed support comes as Infantino faces criticism related to an earlier project to establish a commercial company that would allow private investors to participate, a project that was ultimately not pursued. At the beginning of August, CAF announced that it had unanimously renewed its support for Infantino ahead of the upcoming election.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that some continental confederations oppose Infantino’s project, including the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), as well as the Asian Football Confederation and the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football. According to the source, however, no joint candidate has been announced so far to challenge him. The deadline for submitting candidacies has been set for November 18.
The strategic conference in Cape Verde thus brings together discussions on the future of African football, at both technical and institutional levels, and initiatives relating to the leadership of the global governing body, ahead of major upcoming football events, foremost among them the 2030 World Cup, part of which Morocco is preparing to host.
