Moroccan Sahara: Guatemala Renews Support for Morocco and Considers Autonomy a Basis for a Final Solution to the Dispute

Morocco – On Thursday, October 8, 2026, Guatemala renewed its support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, considering the autonomy plan presented by the Kingdom to be a “realistic, credible and serious basis” for reaching a definitive solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. The position was expressed during the proceedings of the Fourth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly.

In an address before the UN committee responsible for special political questions and decolonization, Guatemala’s representative reaffirmed his country’s support for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Morocco, emphasizing the importance of the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as a foundation for reaching a definitive settlement of the issue.

The Guatemalan diplomat also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, considering that reaching a peaceful solution to this dispute is important not only for the people of the Sahara, but also for strengthening stability, security and regional integration across the Maghreb region.

Maroc – Le Guatemala a renouvelé, jeudi 8 octobre 2026, son soutien à la souveraineté du Maroc et à son intégrité territoriale, estimant que le plan d’autonomie présenté par le Royaume constitue une « base réaliste, crédible et sérieuse » pour parvenir à une solution définitive au différend régional autour du Sahara marocain. Cette position a été exprimée lors des travaux de la quatrième commission de l’Assemblée générale des Nations unies.
