FIFA Ranking.. Morocco Drops to Seventh in the World but Retains African Leadership

Rabat – The Moroccan national team dropped to seventh place in the world in the new FIFA ranking released today, Wednesday, October 7, 2026, after reaching fifth place globally for the first time in its history two weeks ago. The team nevertheless retained its position at the top of the African rankings.

Morocco earned 1,805.34 points in the new ranking, dropping two places from its previous position despite coming through the latest international break with a positive record, having played three matches without suffering a defeat.

Two weeks ago, the Atlas Lions achieved a historic feat by climbing to fifth place in the world, benefiting at the time from Brazil’s draw against Australia, allowing the Moroccan national team to reach the highest position ever achieved by the country in the FIFA world ranking.

During the latest international break, the national team played three matches, beginning with a 2–0 victory over Gabon before repeating the same score against Lesotho in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Morocco concluded its international camp with a 1–1 draw against Mali in a friendly match held in Tangier. These results, despite being positive, were not enough to preserve the fifth position in the world.

According to the new October ranking, Portugal overtook Morocco and moved into fifth place globally with 1,807.69 points, after climbing two positions.

Portugal’s rise followed its 2–1 victory over Norway in the UEFA Nations League, a competition whose matches award more points than friendly games.

Brazil ranked sixth in the world with 1,806.51 points, just ahead of Portugal and Morocco, while the Atlas Lions settled in seventh place with 1,805.34 points.

At the top of the global ranking, Spain retained first place with 2,011.57 points, ahead of Argentina in second with 1,972.80 points.

France ranked third with 1,958.86 points, while England completed the top four with 1,925.59 points.

Portugal recorded the biggest rise among the top ten teams, climbing to fifth place with 1,807.69 points, ahead of Brazil and Morocco.

Belgium ranked eighth with 1,779.17 points, followed by the Netherlands in ninth with 1,778.61 points, while Mexico completed the top ten with 1,738.48 points.

At the continental level, Morocco retained first place in Africa despite its drop in the global ranking.

The Atlas Lions lead Senegal, which ranks second in Africa with 1,648.84 points, followed by Egypt in third with 1,585.86 points.

Algeria ranked fourth in Africa with 1,574.77 points, ahead of Côte d’Ivoire in fifth with 1,569.32 points and Nigeria in sixth with 1,567.97 points.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo ranked seventh in Africa with 1,506.37 points, followed by Cameroon with 1,485.30 points, then Mali with 1,474.14 points, while South Africa ranked tenth on the continent with 1,468.88 points.

Morocco therefore retains its position at the top of African football despite losing two places in the global ranking, as attention now turns to the next FIFA ranking and the upcoming international fixtures that could bring further changes to the teams’ positions.
