Rabat – Le Conseil du gouvernement marocain a approuvé, lors de sa réunion hebdomadaire, un projet de décret portant sur le lancement d’une nouvelle génération de passeports biométriques, dans le but de renforcer la sécurité du document de voyage national et d’améliorer son niveau de protection, a annoncé le ministre délégué chargé des Relations avec le Parlement et porte-parole du gouvernement, Mustapha Baitas.
Lors de la conférence de presse tenue à l’issue du Conseil, M. Baitas a précisé que ce projet, présenté par le ministre de l’Intérieur, s’inscrit dans la stratégie de modernisation des documents officiels en intégrant un nouveau modèle de passeport biométrique conforme aux normes internationales les plus récentes en matière de sécurité et de lutte contre la falsification.
Le porte-parole a ajouté que le futur passeport mettra en valeur l’identité marocaine dans toute sa diversité culturelle, tout en intégrant des technologies avancées destinées à renforcer sa fiabilité et à réduire les risques de fraude documentaire.
Le projet de décret définit les modalités de mise en œuvre et d’adoption de ce nouveau passeport biométrique. Les passeports actuellement en circulation resteront toutefois valables jusqu’à leur date d’expiration ou jusqu’à leur remplacement par le nouveau modèle.
M. Baitas a également indiqué qu’un arrêté conjoint du ministère de l’Intérieur et du ministère des Affaires étrangères, de la Coopération africaine et des Marocains résidant à l’étranger fixera les procédures pratiques ainsi que les conditions d’obtention du nouveau passeport.
Cette réforme s’inscrit dans la volonté des autorités marocaines de moderniser les documents de voyage nationaux, de suivre l’évolution des standards internationaux et de faciliter la mobilité des citoyens tout en garantissant un niveau élevé de sécurité.
Morocco to launch a new generation of biometric passports with enhanced security features
Rabat – The Moroccan Government Council has approved a draft decree introducing a new generation of biometric passports, as part of efforts to strengthen the security of the country’s travel documents and improve protection against fraud, government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas announced following the weekly cabinet meeting.
Speaking at a press conference after the meeting, Baitas explained that the proposal, submitted by the Minister of the Interior, aims to modernise Morocco’s passport system by introducing a redesigned biometric passport that complies with the latest international security standards.
According to the government, the new passport will reflect Morocco’s diverse cultural identity while incorporating advanced technical features designed to improve document reliability and significantly reduce the risk of counterfeiting and forgery.
The draft decree establishes the legal framework for implementing and issuing the new biometric passport. Existing Moroccan passports will remain valid until their expiration date or until they are replaced by the updated version.
Baitas also announced that a joint ministerial decision by the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates will define the practical procedures and eligibility requirements for obtaining the new passport.
The initiative forms part of Morocco’s broader effort to modernise its national travel documents, align them with evolving international technical standards, enhance the protection of official documents and facilitate international travel for Moroccan citizens.
