Switzerland has reaffirmed its support for the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco as a solution to the dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, describing it as “the most serious, credible, and pragmatic basis” for resolving the issue at the international level.

This position was expressed in a joint statement following talks between Swiss Vice President and Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, who is on a working visit to the Swiss capital, Bern.

In the same document, Switzerland also praised United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, considering that the autonomy option under Moroccan sovereignty remains among the most realistic and feasible solutions within ongoing international efforts to reach a political settlement.

Switzerland further emphasized its support for the central role played by the United Nations in this matter, as well as the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, within the framework of the ongoing political process.

This stance comes amid growing international momentum marked by increasing support for the autonomy initiative, alongside evolving positions by several countries, reinforcing Morocco’s proposal as a practical and sustainable solution to the dispute.
