The Rabat Court of First Instance decided on Monday to postpone the trial of an Algerian football fan (R.B.) until January 19, 2026, in order to allow the defense team sufficient time to prepare its legal arguments in the case currently before the court.
The defendant is being prosecuted on charges related to public indecency, as well as the use of language deemed offensive to public morals and decency against an individual or a group of people during a sports match or sporting event, according to official information related to the case.
The case stems from the circulation of a video clip on social media platforms showing the fan in the stands of Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium during the match between the Algerian national team and its Congolese counterpart (DR Congo), as part of the Round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. The footage was accompanied by behavior considered provocative and contrary to public morals, triggering widespread outrage and condemnation among social media users.
Following up on the matter, the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Rabat Court of First Instance decided to prosecute the Algerian fan while in custody and ordered his detention at Al Arjat Prison. According to information obtained by Fes News, the charges brought against him relate to public indecency and the utterance of offensive and immoral expressions during a sporting event, with the case referred to the judiciary to rule on the alleged acts in accordance with applicable legal procedures.
Further details indicate that security services arrested the individual in the city of Casablanca before presenting him to the competent public prosecutor. The fan later published another video in which he claimed that the incident was merely a “joke,” asserting that the liquid seen in the video was unrelated to what had initially been alleged.
According to informed sources, these measures fall within the authorities’ commitment to enforcing the laws governing sporting events and preserving public order and morals within sports facilities, while emphasizing that the judiciary remains the sole authority empowered to adjudicate the facts and determine their legal consequences.
