A resident of the city of Taza has filed a complaint with the municipal council services following an incident that, according to him, revealed the absence of clear pricing for grave-digging services. This came after he was asked to pay a high amount to dig a grave for the burial of a family member.
According to available information, the incident dates back to Tuesday, January 6, 2026, when the man’s aunt passed away. As he headed to Rahma Cemetery to complete burial procedures, he was surprised to be asked to pay 800 Moroccan dirhams for digging the grave.
The complainant explained that when he inquired about the reason for this amount, he was told that recent rainfall and the clay-like nature of the soil justified the cost, according to those in charge of the digging. He added that he found himself in a difficult humanitarian situation, caught between the shock of loss and the time constraints requiring swift burial, which—he said—forced him to pay the requested amount despite his objection.
Two days after the incident, on Thursday, January 8, 2026, the citizen went to the municipal council headquarters to submit a formal complaint regarding what he considered unjustified fees for a service that should be regulated and clearly framed. However, according to his account, he was unable to meet the council president and left without receiving any official clarification.
The citizen stressed that turning to public opinion is not only aimed at recovering his right, but also at opening a broader public debate on how cemeteries are managed, the absence of publicly displayed pricing lists, and oversight of services linked to sensitive humanitarian circumstances. He questioned the legality of such practices and which authority is empowered to set the prices for grave-digging services.
According to observers of local affairs, this incident raises broader questions about the responsibility of the territorial municipality in organizing cemetery affairs and ensuring transparency in services provided to users—so as to preserve citizens’ dignity and ease their burden during moments of loss.
