Morocco head coach Walid Regragui confirmed on Sunday evening that midfielder Azzedine Ounahi will miss the remainder of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 due to an injury sustained during a training session prior to the match against Tanzania.
Speaking at the post-match press conference following Morocco’s 1–0 victory over Tanzania, Regragui explained that Ounahi suffered a tear in his calf muscle, an injury that requires a recovery period of between five and six weeks, effectively ending his participation in this edition of the continental tournament.
The national team coach noted that the injury dates back to a previous period when the player was with his club Girona FC, expressing his regret at losing one of the key elements in the midfield of the Atlas Lions, given Ounahi’s technical importance to the squad.
This development comes as the Morocco national football team secured qualification for the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Tanzania in the round of 16 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The national team’s technical staff is expected to manage the upcoming phase by relying on alternative midfield options, as Morocco prepares to continue its campaign in the knockout stages of the tournament.
