The Criminal Chamber of First Instance at the Marrakesh Court of Appeal concluded, last Tuesday, the case known in the media as the “Sidi Youssef Ben Ali” group. The defendants were prosecuted in connection with incidents that occurred in the neighborhood and were described by the prosecution as involving arson, vandalism, and road blocking. All 37 defendants were tried while in custody.
According to available information, the judicial panel closed the case after lengthy hearings during which it heard the defense pleadings, the requests of the Public Prosecution, as well as the statements of the defendants, before delivering its rulings. The verdicts ranged between acquittals and prison sentences, both effective and suspended, depending on the charges attributed to each defendant.
The case dates back to previous incidents in the Sidi Youssef Ben Ali neighborhood that resulted in material damage and acts of disorder, prompting intervention by security authorities and the opening of an investigation under the supervision of the competent Public Prosecution, which ultimately led to the defendants being referred to court.
The newspaper reaffirms its full respect for the presumption of innocence and the right of all parties to appeal in accordance with the applicable legal procedures.
