During an extraordinary session held on Wednesday, the Taza Municipal Council approved an 8 million dirhams allocation from the municipality’s budget as a contribution to a project to rehabilitate commercial shops damaged by the “Qobbat Souk” fire in the old المدينة العتيقة, as part of a co-financed program with institutional partners.
According to information circulating about the project, the rehabilitation works are expected to be funded through a partnership involving Taza Municipality, the Ministry of Interior, the Regional Multi-Service Company (SRM) for the Fès–Meknès region, the Ministry of National Territory Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and City Policy, the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
During the same session, the council also approved a delegated project management (maîtrise d’ouvrage déléguée) agreement with the National Agency for Public Facilities (ANEP), and endorsed the reallocation of budget appropriations to support the partnership agreement financing this project.
This decision follows the fire that broke out at “Qobbat Souk” on Saturday, 29 November, which—according to available information—affected around 40 shops, with damage ranging from total to partial, particularly shops linked to traditional tailoring, clothing, and sweets, within an urban setting marked by adjoining storefronts and narrow passageways in the old fabric of the city.
“Qobbat Souk” is considered one of the historic markets in Upper Taza, serving as a traditional space for artisans and traders. It also retains a heritage architectural character that distinguishes the old city, and has previously undergone restoration works aimed at preserving its identity and supporting commercial activity.
Despite the approval of funding and the supervision agreement, the project’s implementation remains dependent on completing administrative and technical procedures and coordinating partners’ interventions—steps that will determine the actual start date of the works. Key expected milestones include finalizing the signing of the definitive agreement, launching tenders/contracts for the works, then issuing service orders and beginning on-site operations, alongside an announcement of timelines and execution phases.
Fes News says it will continue to follow developments in this file and will publish any clarifications issued by Taza Municipality or the concerned partners upon receipt, in line with verification standards and the right of reply.
