Fez – The Popular Union of Wage Earners – Press and Publishers Sector has expressed its rejection of the House of Councillors’ approval of the draft law regulating the National Press Council, stating that the manner in which the text was passed raises questions, in its view, about respect for the principles of self-regulation and the independence of the profession.
In a statement, the union said that the current version of the law is not consistent with the provisions of Article 28 of the Constitution, arguing that it relies on a logic of appointment and supervision while reducing professional representation within an institution that is supposed to independently regulate the press sector.
The union also criticized what it described as the absence of broad professional debate during the drafting stages of the law, considering that the exclusion of professional journalists from this process could, in its assessment, weaken the profession and further deepen the precariousness of salaried journalists.
In a related context, the union condemned what it called campaigns of defamation and blackmail carried out by certain media outlets, calling for the opening of a judicial investigation into these practices, particularly in light of what the statement described as links between some of these outlets and public funding.
The union announced its absolute rejection of the law in its adopted form and confirmed its intention to organize a protest sit-in on Thursday, December 25, 2025, in front of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication. It also announced the launch of a protest and legal program to defend press independence and to confront what it described as manifestations of media trivialization, defamation, and mismanagement of public funds.
The statement concluded by reaffirming the union’s commitment to what it considers an ongoing professional struggle for a free and independent press, pending future professional and institutional reactions to the law.
