Fez News – Education and School Safety
Taza – Douar Ifrane, part of the Matmata commune in Taza Province, is experiencing extreme concern after the local primary school – affiliated with the Ain Fendel school group – has become a real danger threatening the safety of more than 120 male and female students and teaching staff, due to dangerous cracks in its walls and ceilings that are on the verge of collapse at any moment.
Historic School Turned into Time Bomb
The school was built in the 1960s and for decades served as an educational beacon that trained generations of high-level civilian and military personnel in the region. Today, after decades of neglect, it has become:
- Classroom walls are cracked and threatened with total collapse
- Ceilings are leaking and on the verge of collapse
- Floors are cracked and doors and windows are completely dilapidated
Recent rainfall has increased the danger of the situation, as residents and parents fear a catastrophe could occur at any moment.
Parents of Students: “We Send Our Children Every Morning While We’re Afraid”
“We don’t sleep at night out of fear for our children,” expressed one parent, adding: “The school has become a threat to our children’s lives, and we demand immediate intervention before tragedy strikes.”
Urgent Demands from Residents
- Temporarily close the school to protect students and teachers
- Include the institution in the emergency renovation program for schools on the verge of collapse
- Provide alternative study space during the repair period
- Immediate intervention from the Regional Academy for Education and Training Fez-Meknes and the Provincial Directorate in Taza
This catastrophic situation is new evidence of the suffering of many rural schools in the Fez-Meknes region, despite efforts made in national renovation programs. The question remains: When will officials intervene before it’s too late?
