Moroccan House of Representatives to Hold Special Public Session on Monday to Discuss Security Council Resolution on the Sahara

Rabat – November 1, 2025 – The President of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, announced the convening of a special public session on Monday, November 3, 2025, dedicated to discussing the recent resolution issued by the UN Security Council regarding the national cause, which is considered a crowning achievement of the Kingdom’s efforts in consolidating the Moroccanness of the Sahara.

According to an official statement issued by the House, the session will convene at 2:00 PM, followed immediately by the weekly session dedicated to oral questions addressed to the government. This special session aims to exchange views on the positive ramifications of this historic resolution, which confirmed international community support for the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty as the sole basis for a political settlement.

Background of the International Resolution

The UN Security Council adopted, on the evening of Friday, October 31, 2025, a resolution that represents a qualitative shift in the path to resolving the fabricated dispute over the Moroccan Sahara. According to the resolution, which received support from 11 members with three abstentions (Russia, China, Pakistan), granting the Sahara genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty “could represent the most viable solution” to the issue that has lasted fifty years. The resolution also called on the concerned parties to enter into serious negotiations without delay.

His Majesty King Mohammed VI welcomed this resolution in a speech addressed to the Moroccan people, describing it as a “new opening in the path of consolidating the Moroccanness of the Sahara,” noting that it comes after fifty years of national sacrifices.

Importance of the Parliamentary Session

The session will allow representatives from various political factions to express their support for the Moroccan proposal, focusing on the parliamentary role in strengthening national diplomacy. Discussions are expected to include:

  • Affirming National Sovereignty: Consolidating territorial integrity as a non-negotiable national constant.
  • Regional Implications: How to enhance stability in the Maghreb region and the Sahel through this solution.
  • Supporting Diplomatic Efforts: Calling for strengthening international cooperation to definitively end the dispute.

This measure comes in the context of a broad-scale parliamentary campaign, as the Moroccan Union for Higher Education previously issued a statement praising the resolution as a culmination of the national struggle, while international parties have also expressed their welcome for it.

International Reactions

  • United States: Confirmed its full support for the Moroccan proposal as a realistic solution.
  • France and Spain: Welcomed the resolution as a step toward regional peace.
  • Algeria: Abstained from voting, while ignoring the call for negotiations.
