CHAN 2024: Coach Tarik Sektioui Says Players’ Mental Strength Made the Difference Against Zambia

The national team coach, Tarik Sektioui, stated on Thursday in Nairobi that the mental strength of the Moroccan team players was crucial in securing the 3-1 victory over Zambia, in the fourth matchday of Group A at the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

In a post-match press conference, Sektioui emphasized, “The players were mentally strong and managed the game well to earn this deserved victory.” He added, “The players showed up as expected. I commend their determination and will to win.”

He noted that the team started and ended the match strongly, explaining, “The match was very difficult because Zambia’s offensive line was threatening several times.” Sektioui pointed out that “thanks to their individual qualities and tactical discipline, the players met the challenge.” He acknowledged missing many chances but highlighted that the team performed better in the attacking third compared to the previous match against Kenya.

Regarding the upcoming match against the Democratic Republic of Congo, the coach called it decisive: “For us, it’s simple, we must win that match, and the work will begin tomorrow as we don’t have much time.”

Man of the Match Mihri

For his part, forward Youssef Mihri, who was named man of the match, said the victory was the result of collective work by the players and technical staff, emphasizing that the positive outcome was well-deserved.

“We were more tactically disciplined and eager to win,” he noted, adding that “the players were fully aware of the responsibility on their shoulders.” Mihri expressed readiness for the next match against DR Congo, aiming to pass the first round, which remains the team’s primary goal.

With this win, the Atlas Lions temporarily climbed to second place in the group standings with six points from three matches.

Another match in the group on the same day will see Angola face DR Congo later in the afternoon at Kasarani Stadium.
