Fez, Morocco – The Regional Directorate for the North-Central region of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) – Water Sector, has announced that it has taken urgent measures to address the drinking water supply disruptions in the towns of El Manzel and Ribat El Kheir and their surrounding villages in the Sefrou province.
According to a press release from the office, this action was taken after the region experienced “supply disruptions” that led to a drop in water pressure or even complete cut-offs, particularly during the current summer season. This situation is attributed to “successive years of drought and a decline in groundwater levels.”
Urgent Solutions and Structuring Projects
The statement explained that the office has urgently completed and equipped a new well in Ain El Kebir to supply the residents of El Manzel and the surrounding villages. The well began operating on August 4, 2025, with a flow rate of 35 liters per second. Additionally, a pumping station was established in Ribat El Kheir, which became operational on August 10, 2025, to boost the area’s production capacity with an additional flow of 12 liters per second.
The office confirmed that these urgent works have helped resolve the water shortage, which had exceeded 30%, and have improved the water supply situation, making it regular and continuous.
Future Projects to Ensure Water Security
Furthermore, the office has planned two major structuring projects to strengthen and secure the region’s drinking water supply:
- Ain Oumandar Project: This project aims to boost drinking water production for the municipalities of Ribat El Kheir and El Manzel at a cost of 60 million dirhams. The first phase is currently underway, with completion expected before December 2025, and will supply the two towns with a flow rate of 60 liters per second. The second phase, which involves equipping the Ain Oumandar source with a capacity of 100 liters per second, is scheduled to begin in September 2025 and be completed before the start of summer 2026.
- Ribat El Kheir Dam Project: This project involves a study to secure the drinking water supply for the municipalities of Sefrou province from the future Ribat El Kheir Dam, which will be constructed as part of the National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation 2020-2027 (PNAEPI).
In conclusion, ONEE urged all stakeholders and citizens to rationalize their consumption of drinking water and use it wisely, reaffirming that its teams are working diligently to ensure that the population is supplied with water under the best possible conditions.
