Peruvian Congress Deals a Blow to Algeria and Its Proxy: Official Support for Moroccan Autonomy and Warning Against Polisario’s Terrorist Alliances

In a strong diplomatic move highlighting the growing international support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara, the Congress of the Republic of Peru, during an official session held in the capital Lima, approved a historic resolution reaffirming recognition of the Kingdom of Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces. The resolution also calls for designating the “Polisario Front” as a terrorist organization due to its links with extremist groups and involvement in illegal activities.

The resolution was presented by Deputy Carmen Patricia Juárez Gallegos, drawing on the longstanding historical ties between Peru and Morocco since 1964, based on mutual respect, cooperation, and upholding international law principles. The document states that Morocco’s autonomy initiative, proposed since 2007, represents the most serious, realistic, and credible solution to the manufactured conflict over Western Sahara, noting its broad international backing from major powers such as the United States, France, and Spain.

Going further, the resolution highlights the dangerous activities of the Polisario Front, linking it to terrorist groups like Hezbollah, involvement in arms and human trafficking, and the exploitation of minors in the Tindouf camps under its control on Algerian soil. The document expresses deep concern over the so-called “Tehran-Hezbollah-Polisario axis” seeking to destabilize North Africa and the Maghreb by financing extremist activities and fueling armed conflicts, constituting a direct threat to Peru’s partners such as Morocco and to regional and international stability.

The resolution calls on the Peruvian executive branch, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to adopt an official position supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and to recognize the Moroccan autonomy plan as a solution consistent with international law. It also urges the international community to launch investigations into Polisario’s human rights violations and suspected trafficking networks, emphasizing the need to assess the suitability of designating the Polisario Front as a terrorist organization to enable stronger legal and diplomatic measures against it.

This parliamentary initiative, the second of its kind in 2025, confirms that Peru’s stance is neither temporary nor circumstantial but reflects a mature political and institutional approach that views support for Morocco as a strategic choice and the autonomy plan as a realistic solution to a protracted regional dispute.

This Peruvian position aligns with profound international shifts regarding the Sahara issue, at a time when Polisario’s isolation grows and separatist claims decline, while Moroccan diplomacy based on realism, initiative, and South-South cooperation gains momentum.

The Peruvian document appears to open the door for further developments across Latin America, representing not only direct political support but also a clear warning against complacency toward separatist groups linked to terrorism, which turn the “self-determination” cause into a façade for chaotic transnational schemes.

Through this renewed support, Morocco consolidates its position as a reliable partner on the international stage, while Polisario’s isolation deepens, increasingly constrained by facts, international law, and growing awareness among states that backing separatism fuels extremism and disorder.

In this sense, the Sahara issue has evolved beyond a mere regional conflict into a political and moral test for the international community on how to deal with armed groups operating outside the law under a false political guise.
