(From MAP) Resounding Success of the 5th Ministerial Conference of the “Adaptation of African Agriculture to Climate Change” Initiative in Meknes

Meknes, Morocco – April 23, 2025 – (MAP) The fifth annual Ministerial Conference of the “Adaptation of African Agriculture to Climate Change” (AAA) Initiative concluded successfully today, Wednesday, in Meknes, under the theme “Agroforestry and Climate Resilience: An African Vision for Food Security and Sustainable Development,” on the sidelines of the 17th edition of the International Agriculture Show in Morocco (SIAM).

This conference, considered the primary high-level political platform bringing together agriculture ministers from various African countries, provided a renewed opportunity to exchange experiences, visions, and recommendations to address the challenges and opportunities of agriculture on the continent, and to lay the foundations for collective continental action for the future. The aim was to define the major strategic orientations of the AAA Initiative, which seeks to strengthen the capacity of African agriculture to adapt to increasing climate change challenges, a crucial issue for the economic and social development of the continent. An integrated economic and social development in Africa cannot be conceived without resilient and sustainable agriculture.

This meeting was a significant moment for participants to discuss effective ways to accelerate the implementation of appropriate measures, while strengthening the unified African front in the face of climate change. The conference also witnessed a significant presence of representatives from technical and financial institutions, development partners, as well as an elite group of researchers, representatives of development institutes, the private sector, and academic and scientific experts.

The conference also served as an opportunity to present the key conclusions of the scientific round table held on April 22nd, under the central theme: “Agroforestry in the Service of Food Security and Climate Resilience in Africa: Linking Science and Policy.” This scientific session culminated in the preparation of an important reference document aimed at supporting the position of African delegations and negotiators during the Conference of the Parties (COP30). This coordinated approach seeks to consolidate global recognition of the crucial role played by agroforestry in Africa, not only in achieving food security but also in strengthening the resilience of environmental and social systems, as well as in mobilizing the climate finance deserved by the continent.

The success of this conference reflects the progress made in African coordination and reaffirms that Africa possesses the will and the necessary skills to build a sustainable and risk-resistant agricultural future, and a fair and equitable climate, in cooperation with partners.
