Meknes – Recent scenes showing accumulated waste around the historic Sahrij Swani monument in the city of Meknes have reignited debate over how to preserve heritage sites after their restoration. The discussion comes only months after the completion of a major rehabilitation project, which received significant public funding as part of efforts to enhance the city’s cultural and architectural heritage.
Local community representatives in Meknes told Fes News that the area surrounding Sahrij Swani has recently seen the accumulation of food leftovers, packaging, and other waste. According to them, this situation negatively affects the appearance of one of the most important historical and tourist landmarks in the Imperial City, particularly during periods of high visitor attendance.
The same sources believe that restoration projects, regardless of their cost, remain dependent on continuous maintenance, regular cleaning, and effective day-to-day management, as well as promoting a culture of protecting public spaces among visitors to ensure the long-term sustainability of public investments dedicated to preserving cultural heritage.
Local community representatives added that Sahrij Swani is one of the city’s most significant historical and tourist attractions. In their view, this requires more frequent cleaning operations, stronger monitoring measures, the installation of additional waste collection bins, and increased public awareness about the importance of preserving this historic landmark.
The same sources also called for greater cooperation among municipal services, local authorities, civil society organizations, and visitors to maintain the cleanliness of the site and ensure that it continues to serve as a cultural and tourist destination reflecting Meknes’ status as one of Morocco’s UNESCO World Heritage cities.
