U-20 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2025: Morocco Learns Its Opponents in Tough Group

The draw for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Egypt from April 27th to May 18th, 2025, has placed the Moroccan national team in Group B, alongside Nigeria, Tunisia, and Kenya. This group is considered balanced and competitive for the “Atlas Lions Cubs.”

The draw ceremony took place today, Sunday, in Cairo, finalizing the composition of the three groups for this continental edition. Morocco, which previously won the African title in this age category in 1997, will face formidable opponents: Nigeria, a five-time U-20 African champion, Tunisia, experienced in Maghrebian encounters, and Kenya, an ambitious underdog.

World Cup Qualification Target

The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed teams, will qualify for the quarterfinals, marking the beginning of the direct elimination rounds. The four semi-finalists will secure their spots in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, which will be held in Chile from September 27th to October 19th, 2025.

Thus, this edition of the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations represents a double opportunity for the Moroccan team: to shine on the African stage and to open the doors to the World Cup.

The Moroccan national team secured its qualification for the tournament after topping the Union of North African Football Federations (UNAF) tournament, which was held last November in Suez, Egypt. They finished at the top of their group thanks to a solid collective performance and a tight defense.

It is worth noting that the hosting of this U-20 Africa Cup of Nations was originally assigned to Côte d’Ivoire before being transferred to Egypt due to “unforeseen circumstances.” On March 27th, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), with the support of the government, would host the event, guaranteeing the required logistical and sporting standards.

Composition of the Other Groups:

  • Group A: Egypt (Host), Zambia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania
  • Group B: Morocco, Nigeria, Tunisia, Kenya
  • Group C: Senegal (2023 Title Holder), Central African Republic, DR Congo, Ghana
