Two Palestinians Killed by Israeli Army in West Bank

Jenin: The Israeli army announced on Wednesday that it had killed two Palestinians it described as “terrorists” in the northern occupied West Bank, in an area where the Islamic Jihad movement also reported the deaths of two of its fighters.

“Following an exchange of fire, the terrorists Mohammad Zakarneh and Marouh Khuzaymia (…) were eliminated,” the army said in a statement.

The army stated that Mohammad Zakarneh was wanted for his involvement in the “deadly terrorist attack in the town of al-Funduq on January 6th, in which three Israeli civilians were murdered.”

Marouh Khuzaymia was also wanted for the same reasons and had been released from Israeli prisons during a prisoner exchange in November 2023, following the hostage-taking in Israel on October 7th, 2023.

The Al-Quds Brigades, the armed wing of the Islamic Jihad movement, which Israel considers a terrorist organization, confirmed their deaths, specifying that Mohammad Zakarneh was 23 years old and Marouh Khuzaymia was 19 years old.

Israeli authorities and Islamic Jihad both stated that the two young men were killed during an exchange of fire in Misilyah, a village near Jenin.

Separately, an AFP correspondent on the ground reported that the Israeli army entered Jericho, in the southern West Bank, with armored vehicles.

The West Bank has been occupied by Israel since 1967 and is currently facing the threat of annexation by members of Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, one of the most right-wing in Israel’s history.

After two particularly deadly years, violence has surged in the West Bank since the beginning of the war in Gaza, triggered by the unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Israel on October 7th, 2023.

According to data from the Palestinian Authority, at least 921 Palestinians, including numerous fighters but also many civilians, have been killed there by Israeli soldiers or settlers.

During the same period, according to official Israeli data, at least 33 Israelis, including civilians and soldiers, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military raids.
