Morocco Announces Evacuation of 369 Citizens from Gaza Since “Truce” Agreement with Israel

Rabat: Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, has confirmed that the Kingdom of Morocco has successfully evacuated five groups of Moroccan citizens stranded in the Gaza Strip and their families, totaling 369 people, since the official Israeli announcement of the truce.

This statement came in response to a question posed by the head of the parliamentary group of the Party of Progress and Socialism, Rachid Hamouni, regarding the situation of Moroccans stranded in the Strip. Bourita addressed the case of Moroccan citizen “Dounia Ait Zakour” and her family members, explaining that her name was included in the special list of citizens wishing to leave the Gaza Strip on April 8, 2024. However, he noted her failure to attend the scheduled appointment at the Rafah crossing without informing the Moroccan mission in Ramallah of the reasons for her absence, which prevented her departure at that time.

The government official clarified that the escalation of Israeli military operations in the Strip and the subsequent closure of border crossings and tightening of security measures prompted the Kingdom of Morocco, like other countries, to temporarily suspend the evacuation of citizens from the Gaza Strip, pending the stabilization of conditions and the availability of suitable circumstances for the resumption of these operations.

Bourita affirmed that the central departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Kingdom’s representations in the concerned countries continue their efforts to monitor the conditions of the Moroccan community residing abroad and coordinate with the authorities of the host countries to facilitate the return of stranded citizens as soon as the appropriate conditions for their movement are available.

Regarding the specific case of “Dounia Ait Zakour,” the Minister stated that the Moroccan Embassy in Ramallah contacted her to inquire about the reasons for her absence from the scheduled departure on April 8th and requested that she provide the documents for her husband and newborn child to coordinate their repatriation process as soon as security and logistical conditions allow for the resumption of evacuation operations.

In conclusion, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized the Kingdom of Morocco’s commitment to continuing to provide all forms of support and assistance to members of the Moroccan community present in the Gaza Strip and in other regions experiencing difficult security and humanitarian situations.
