Tens of thousands of Moroccans demonstrated this Sunday morning in Rabat, expressing their support for the Gaza Strip and their rejection of the normalization of diplomatic relations with Israel.
From Bab El Had to the Parliament headquarters, protesters braved the heavy rain to reaffirm their unwavering support for the people of Gaza in the face of Israeli aggression. They hailed the resilience of those who, for over a year and a half, have endured bombings, killings, and famine.
Despite the absence of the Al Adl Wal Ihsane (Justice and Charity) movement, traditionally present at mobilizations for Palestine, the demonstration, called for by the National Action Group for Palestine, brought together figures from various political and ideological backgrounds. Men, women, and children, who came from all regions of Morocco, chanted powerful slogans against what they described as the ongoing “genocide” in Gaza.
Among the most prominent slogans heard were: “The people want the liberation of Palestine,” “Greetings from Morocco to proud Palestine,” “We all say together: Long live Palestine,” and “The people want the abolition of normalization.”
The march also featured symbolic performances illustrating the crimes perpetrated against the Gazan population, staged by young people and children. Two Israeli flags were burned to mark popular anger.
Support Against Arrogance
Mohamed Nabil Benabdellah, Secretary-General of the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS), stated that “the Moroccan people are returning to the streets to express their solidarity with the Palestinian people. This march brings together all its political components to reject Zionist crimes and the policy of displacement.”
He emphasized the popular rejection of this war aimed at annihilating the Palestinian people with the complicity of Western powers, adding: “The Palestinians will remain resistant, and the Moroccans will remain in solidarity.”
For his part, Mustapha El Khalfi, former Minister of Communication and government spokesperson, stressed that “in the face of the massacres in Gaza, the attacks in the West Bank, Lebanon, and Syria, the minimum that the Moroccan people can do is to demonstrate.” He reaffirmed the commitment of Moroccans to support the Palestinian resistance until liberation.
A Popular Referendum Against Normalization
Khadija Essabbar, a member of the National Coordination of the Action Group for Palestine, declared that “this march is a referendum: the Moroccan people want an end to the massacres in Gaza and an end to normalization.”
She denounced what she described as the “indifference of the international community” to the crimes committed against civilians, asserting that “these marches will not stop as long as the Zionist killing machine continues.”
The activist sees this massive mobilization as a strong sign of the despair of Moroccans in the face of global inaction and the disregard for Palestinian blood.
