Morocco and Mexico: Talks on Strengthening Parliamentary Cooperation

A Moroccan parliamentary delegation held talks in Mexico City with several Mexican officials on ways to enhance parliamentary cooperation and coordination on issues of mutual interest. These discussions took place on Saturday on the sidelines of the participation of Moroccan parliamentarians in the World Conference of Women Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), held in the Mexican capital.

The Moroccan delegation participating in this international meeting included MPs Laila Ahl Sidi Mouloud from the National Rally of Independents (RNI), Nadia Benzedfa from the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), Aicha El Karji from the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), and Hind El Ghazali, advisor to the RNI.

These meetings provided an opportunity to highlight Morocco’s experience in promoting women’s representation within legislative and political institutions, as well as the role of parliamentary dialogue in strengthening legislative partnerships and defending common interests. The Moroccan delegation met with the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Alejandro Murat Hinojosa, and the Chairwoman of the Gender Equality Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, Martha Elena Patricio.

The Moroccan parliamentarians also discussed with MP Cynthia López Castro, head of the Office of Women Parliamentarians, and MP Anahí González Hernández, ways to enhance women’s presence in legislative institutions and exchange experiences on laws and initiatives supporting women’s political participation.

These meetings highlighted the reforms undertaken by Morocco to strengthen women’s representation, including the inclusion of the principle of parity in Article 19 of the Constitution, and the role of women in the current government, where they hold seven out of 23 ministerial portfolios. The Moroccan delegation also praised the progress made by Mexico in this area, particularly after the election of Claudia Sheinbaum as the country’s first female president, as well as the progress in gender parity in the Federal Congress and local governments, reflecting significant progress in strengthening women’s political participation.

The meetings also addressed issues related to renewable energy and migration challenges, given the positions of both countries as major transit points for migrants.
