After 6 years of closure: Reopening of Sidi Bouzkria Market in Meknes

The Mayor of Meknes, Abbas Lomghari, visited Sidi Bouzkria Market on Tuesday, accompanied by several members of his office, in a move aimed at reopening the market, which had been closed during the previous council’s term under the leadership of Abdullah Bouano.

This decision comes at a time when the market has remained a point of controversy since its closure, causing significant social and economic issues that have affected the region and its residents.

In the absence of an official communication platform from the council or an official statement, news of the market’s reopening spread through social media platforms. The reopening will feature various commercial activities, including the sale of scrap, except for the livestock market, which will remain limited to the Souiria market.

This move comes in response to complaints from local residents who lost their main source of income due to the market’s closure. This prompted an association of scrap traders to organize several protests in the past years.

Local sources indicate that the current council plans to designate Saturdays and Sundays for the market’s activities, with Sundays dedicated to the sale of scrap, while Saturdays will be reserved for car and motorcycle sales.

According to the same sources, the council will work in coordination with the relevant authorities to refurbish the market using its own resources, with plans to eventually launch a tender to lease the market to a private company. The sources also confirmed that the land designated for the market will remain available for any future developmental or social projects benefiting the area.

The decision to relocate the weekly market was made by the previous council, led by Abdullah Bouano, who argued that the new market location in Souiria lacked economic appeal.
