Minister of Agriculture reassures Moroccans: “Meat prices will stabilize and egg and chicken prices will drop soon”

Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forestry, Ahmed Bouari, confirmed that the government has taken several measures to stabilize red meat markets in Morocco, as 21,800 cattle, 124,000 sheep and 704 tons of red meat were imported until last Wednesday, which helped stabilize the market.

During a press conference following the cabinet meeting, the minister highlighted that there are indications of a decline in beef prices compared to last year, explaining that the difference between prices in slaughterhouses and retail prices is due to the profit margins of traders.

In the context of boosting local production, El Bouari noted that the national herd saw a 38% decline compared to 2016. He also revealed that the government is preparing a comprehensive program to support the livestock production sector, which includes improving animal nutrition, providing 18 million quintals of fodder for breeders, and supporting technical frameworks to improve the productivity of sheep, goats, cows and camels.

The minister also stressed the government’s interest in animal health and the implementation of programs to support livestock farming in vulnerable rural areas, especially for small breeders, noting that there are efforts to preserve female livestock in order to rebuild the herd.

El Bouari also announced the preparation of a special program to support livestock production projects targeting rural youth, with the aim of enabling them to find jobs in this vital sector.

Regarding egg and chicken prices, the minister explained that the current production exceeds last year’s production, highlighting that the high demand for eggs and chickens came as a result of the high prices of red meat. He pointed out that the Ministry of Agriculture He noted that the Ministry of Agriculture has held meetings with professionals who have expressed their willingness to increase production with the aim of maintaining reasonable prices for consumers in the coming months.

These measures are part of the government’s strategy to ensure the sustainability of the livestock sector and maintain the balance of local markets.
