Abdessamad Kayouh, the Minister of Transport and Logistics, announced last Monday in the House of Representatives that a new airport, named Mohammed V, will be constructed in Casablanca, directly opposite the current airport. This new airport is expected to accommodate 20 million passengers.
The minister specified that this airport will serve as a hub dedicated to long-haul flights, aiming to connect all regions of the world. Casablanca is set to become a strategic crossroads for connections between Africa, Europe, North America, South America, and Latin America.
Kayouh also indicated that the fleet of Royal Air Maroc will expand from 50 to 250 aircraft by 2033. In a related context, images circulating on social media a few months ago showcased a proposed design for the new Casablanca airport, which is scheduled for completion by 2030 with modern specifications.
In June of this year, the National Airports Office (ONDA) announced the commissioning of a new international transit area at the current Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca.
This new transit area has been designed to be more spacious and functional, capable of handling up to 2 million passengers annually over an area of 5,000 square meters—two and a half times the size of the previous area.
It features 11 check-in counters for transit passengers, 10 explosive detection systems (EDS) for checked baggage with an automatic line, 7 metal detectors and portable detection devices, 3 body scanners, as well as 7 elevators and 8 escalators.
The expansion aims to enhance the airport’s capacity and streamline passenger flows, particularly for connections. It is part of a comprehensive strategy to develop Mohammed V Airport as a major hub in the region. The modernization of security and mobility equipment is intended to reduce waiting times and improve safety, thereby providing a more pleasant and enjoyable transit experience for passengers.
This initiative responds to the ongoing growth in traffic at Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca, reinforcing its position as an international hub. The airport continues to evolve and adapt to passenger needs while preparing to host major sporting events in the coming years.
