In a significant move to strengthen its trade ties with sub-Saharan African countries, Morocco has announced the launch of a new maritime route connecting the port of Agadir to the port of Dakar in Senegal. This strategic initiative, resulting from a collaboration between the Moroccan government and the British company Atlas Marine, aims to provide an effective alternative to traditional land transport.
This new maritime line will allow the transportation of trucks along with their drivers and cargo, with a particular focus on fruit and vegetable shipments. The project is expected to improve transport efficiency and reduce the time required for goods to reach their destination, ensuring the preservation of fresh produce quality.
The Moroccan Ministry of Transport and Logistics has requested Atlas Marine to complete the necessary procedures according to a specific set of conditions, in preparation for launching the service in the near future.
This project comes in response to the numerous challenges faced by land transport to sub-Saharan Africa, including high fuel costs, security risks, and technical difficulties arising from harsh road conditions. It also aims to reduce the carbon footprint of transportation and overcome obstacles associated with transit through neighboring countries.
The maritime route has been warmly welcomed by professionals in the transport sector, who see it as an opportunity to diversify routes for transporting goods to sub-Saharan Africa and improve the competitiveness of Moroccan exports.
This initiative reinforces Morocco’s role as a major logistics hub connecting Africa and Europe, contributing to deepening regional economic integration and attracting more international investments.
