In a letter addressed to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, May God Assist Him, French President Emmanuel Macron officially announced to His Majesty the King that he “considers that the present and the future of Western Sahara fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty”.
In the same message, which coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Throne Day, the President of the French Republic assured His Majesty the King of “the consistency of the French position on this issue linked to the Kingdom’s national security” and that his country “intends to act in harmony with this position at the national and international levels”.
To this end, President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that “for France, autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework within which this issue must be resolved. Our support for the autonomy plan presented by Morocco in 2007 is clear and firm,” he said, adding that this plan ”constitutes, from now on, the only basis for a political, just, sustainable and negotiated solution, in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.”
Regarding the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty, the French head of state believes that “an international consensus is taking shape and is becoming more and more widespread,” stressing that “France is playing its full role in all relevant bodies,” especially by supporting the efforts of the UN Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy. “It is time to move forward,” Macron emphasized in his message. “I encourage all parties to come together for a political settlement, which is within reach.
After praising Morocco’s efforts for the economic and social development of the Moroccan Sahara, the President of the French Republic expressed his commitment that “France will accompany Morocco in these steps for the benefit of the local population.”
The declaration of the French Republic, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, is an important and significant development in support of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara. It is part of the dynamic led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI and involving many countries around the world, in favor of Morocco’s territorial integrity and the autonomy plan as the exclusive framework for the settlement of this regional dispute.
