The Minister of Transport and Logistics confirms the impossibility of electrifying the Fez-Jeddah railway line. For this reason!

The Ministry of Transport and Logistics revealed that the electrification of the railway line between Fez, Taza, Gersif, Taourirt and Oujda was not included in the previous investment plan.

The Minister of Transport and Logistics, Mohamed Abdeljalil, explained that preliminary studies of the high-tension connection to the electrical grid showed its high cost, which made it impossible to program it at the moment.

The minister noted that the National Railway Office is currently updating the studies necessary to electrify this line, with funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB).

In response to a question from MPs about train failures, Abdeljalil confirmed that this project will be included in future plans to rehabilitate the railway line between Fez and the provinces of the East Region, based on the results of the ONR’s studies.

Within the framework of the 2010-2018 investment plan, the government official stressed the modernization and rehabilitation of the Fes-Taza-Oujda railway line at an estimated cost of one billion dirhams, where the works included the renovation of more than 100 kilometers of railways, the rehabilitation of tunnels along 5 kilometers, the strengthening and reinforcement of technical facilities, in addition to improving 39 passages with automatic barriers, the establishment of new stations in Oujda, Tawerirt and Beni Wakil, in addition to the extension of fiber optic lines along the railway line.
