Russia warns the Mouradia military regarding the destabilization policy adopted by Algeria in the Sahel region

A recent Russian diplomatic mission to Algeria highlighted Moscow’s serious concerns about Algeria’s actions in the Sahel region.
The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative of the Russian President for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov, clearly warned Algeria against the policy of destabilization it is adopting, according to informed sources.

The visit, which initially seemed aimed at restoring relations between the two countries, took a more serious turn when Bogdanov ordered Algeria to stop its subversive activities in Niger and Mali. The appeals to the regime were clear: Algeria risked suffering the same fate as France if it did not change its behavior.

The Russian warnings come after a period of cooling in relations between Algeria and Moscow as a result of Algeria’s defection and joining the West during the war in Ukraine. Since then, Algeria has sought to restore relations with Russia, particularly by obtaining a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

However, the purpose of Bogdanov’s visit was not at all friendly. The Russian High Representative’s statements highlighted the concerns of the Sahel countries, especially Mali and Niger, regarding Algeria’s links to armed and separatist groups. These countries made it clear that they may sever their relations with Algeria if their demands are not met.

These recent events highlight growing tensions in the region, which have been exacerbated by Algeria’s regional ambitions and its desire to interfere in the internal affairs of neighboring countries. As relations between Algeria and its Sahel neighbors deteriorate, Algeria risks finding itself increasingly isolated on the international stage.
