Residents of Sefrou Road near the Academy Protest Neglect of Safety Standards in Street Development Works

Fes News

The newspaper “Fes News” received a correspondence from one of its readers, a resident of the affected area on Sefrou Road near the Academy, expressing dissatisfaction with the disregard for safety and accessibility standards during the street development works. The reader pointed out that the ongoing works blatantly violate Decree No. 2.11.246, issued on Dhul-Qa’dah 2, 1432 AH, corresponding to September 30, 2011, which implements the provisions of Law No. 10.03 related to accessibility.

According to the aforementioned decree, sidewalks must have a width of at least 1.50 to 2.00 meters, with slopes ensuring easy passage for persons with disabilities. However, residents were surprised to find that the company executing the works did not adhere to these standards, allocating a sidewalk no wider than one meter and a few centimeters for the residents of four residential buildings and adjacent commercial establishments.

The reader emphasized that this narrow width does not allow pedestrians to pass safely, forcing them to walk on the road, which endangers their lives, especially children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. He expressed deep concern over this negligence, which threatens the safety of citizens, and called on the relevant authorities to intervene urgently to rectify this situation and ensure compliance with legal standards.

It is worth noting that Law No. 10.03 and Decree No. 2.11.246 aim to provide a safe and comfortable environment for all, with a focus on ensuring the rights of persons with disabilities to move easily and safely. However, what has occurred on Sefrou Road demonstrates a clear disregard for these standards, necessitating swift action from local authorities and relevant entities to review the works and compel the executing company to comply with applicable laws.

“Fes News” has reached out to the authorities responsible for the works for clarification and will keep you updated on any new developments regarding this matter.
