Tangier – Security services detained the mayor of Tangier, Mounir Limouri, at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport on Monday morning, immediately after he arrived on a flight from the Spanish city of Malaga, based on a national wanted notice linked to the ongoing investigations into the case of ballot papers discovered at a polling station in Al Qods School in Tangier, according to informed sources.
According to the same sources, Limouri was taken to the Tangier Police Headquarters to begin the procedures and investigations related to the case, pending the outcome of the judicial process.
This development comes after media reports in recent days indicated that a wanted notice had been issued against the mayor of Tangier, following the mention of his name in investigation records relating to the ballot-paper case, although his name was not explicitly included in the judicial statement issued by the public prosecutor’s office.
According to information reported by informed sources, Limouri also serves as campaign director for Abdelatif El Ghalbzouri, the head of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) list in Tangier. This was mentioned in the context of the information linked to the ongoing investigation into the case.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Tangier Court of Appeal had previously announced, in a statement, that investigations into the incident involving a person found carrying a bag containing ballot papers had led to the arrest of five suspects, including two polling-station presidents, their two deputies, and another person. Four of them were brought before the public prosecutor’s office, while investigations continued with the fifth suspect.
In the same statement, the public prosecutor’s office revealed that the suspect found in possession of the bag was serving as a deputy head of a polling station, and that preliminary investigations showed that he had removed a number of ballot papers from inside the polling station with the assistance of the polling-station president, before later returning them in coordination with the other individuals suspected of involvement.
The investigations also showed, according to the same source, that the type of ink used on the seized ballot papers differed from the ink used at polling stations. In light of the preliminary findings, the public prosecutor’s office decided to petition the investigating judge to conduct an investigation into the individuals concerned while they were held in pretrial detention, on suspicion of committing the criminal offense of violating voting procedures, forgery, and participation in such acts.
Mounir Limouri had previously denied, in statements carried by the media, that his trip to Spain was linked to an attempt to flee the ongoing investigations, stressing his willingness to return to Morocco and appear before the competent authorities to provide his explanations regarding the case.
The detention of the mayor of Tangier, and the mention of his name in the context of the investigations, remain part of an ongoing judicial procedure and do not, in themselves, constitute a ruling establishing that he committed any criminal acts, pending the completion of the investigation and the taking of the legally required measures.
Tanger..
