World Cup 2030.. Spanish legend puts Morocco in a strong position to host the final

Rabat – Fès News

Statements by former Spanish international goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares regarding the 2030 World Cup final have attracted widespread attention after he said that Madrid and Barcelona’s chances of hosting the final appeared limited, while he believes Morocco is currently in a stronger position in the race.

Cañizares made the remarks during his appearance on Tiempo de Juego on Spanish radio station “COPE,” where he offered a personal assessment of the competition to host the final and linked it to political and diplomatic factors. In his view, he considered Morocco to currently have better conditions than Madrid for hosting the closing match.

The former goalkeeper of the Spanish national team and Valencia CF said that Spain’s chances, according to his personal assessment, were weak, while expressing his hope that he would be mistaken in that evaluation.

The statements come amid the ongoing debate over which stadium will host the 2030 World Cup final, in a tournament that will be jointly organized by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, alongside three commemorative matches marking the centenary of the World Cup in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay.

The Grand Stade Hassan II in Benslimane is among the main projects linked to Morocco’s preparations for the World Cup, while Spain has put forward the Santiago Bernabéu and Camp Nou stadiums among the options associated with hosting major matches.

However, Cañizares’ statements do not mean that an official decision has been made regarding the venue of the final. According to the available official information, FIFA has not announced a final decision on the stadium that will host the 2030 World Cup final. The positions expressed by officials and former players, including the Spanish goalkeeper’s remarks, therefore remain within the framework of assessments and opinions related to the matter.

Morocco, Spain, and Portugal were designated as host countries for the 2030 World Cup after their joint bid was approved by the FIFA Congress in December 2024, with the three countries set to host 101 matches of the tournament.

The competition over the final carries particular significance given the symbolic importance of the closing match, while work continues to develop stadiums and infrastructure related to hosting the tournament in the three countries.

As discussions and bids concerning potential final venues continue, the final decision regarding the allocation of matches remains the responsibility of the tournament’s organizing bodies, in accordance with the official process adopted by FIFA.

Mondial 2030..
