Taounate – Construction work on the dual carriageway project for National Road No. 8, linking Fes and Taounate, continues to progress steadily following the completion of the first section, extending 16 kilometers between the Oulad Daoud Commune and the center of Taounate City. The project is part of a strategic initiative aimed at improving road infrastructure and strengthening connectivity between Taounate Province and the capital of the Fes-Meknes Region.
The project is being implemented as part of the Regional Development Program of the Fes-Meknes Region under a partnership agreement involving the Fes-Meknes Regional Council, the Taounate Provincial Administration, the Ministry of Equipment and Water, and the Agency for the Promotion and Development of the Northern Provinces.
With a total investment of approximately MAD 1.56 billion, the project involves upgrading 73 kilometers of National Road No. 8 into a dual carriageway, divided into four sections. Its objectives include improving road safety, facilitating traffic flow, reducing travel time, and supporting the economic and social development of Taounate Province.
In a press statement, Mohamed El Mehtadi, Head of the Temporary Preparation Unit for the Fes–Taounate National Road No. 8 Dual Carriageway Project, said that construction is progressing across the various phases of the project, confirming the completion of the first section while work continues on the remaining sections according to the established schedule.
The project is expected to improve residents’ access to essential services and enhance the movement of people and goods, as National Road No. 8 is one of the region’s main transport corridors linking Taounate with Fes, carrying increasing traffic volumes.
Meanwhile, observers of local affairs believe that the completion of the first section represents a positive milestone. However, they stress that the real challenge remains completing the remaining three sections within the announced deadlines so that the project can achieve its intended development goals. They note that road users are eagerly awaiting the completion of the entire project due to its importance in improving road safety, reducing travel time, and enhancing connectivity for several communes in Taounate Province.
