Taza — Recent repair works in the Al-Maghreb Al-Arabi neighborhood in the city of Taza have triggered a wave of anger and discontent among residents after, according to consistent accounts from local actors, an intervention that was supposed to improve infrastructure turned into a new source of visual damage and disturbance.
According to available information, pothole repair works on the road were carried out in what residents described as a “primitive” manner. The company in charge reportedly limited its intervention to randomly filling the hole with a quantity of raw asphalt, without respecting applicable technical standards or the specifications set out in the contract. As a result, the so-called repair became a permanent eyesore in the heart of the neighborhood.
The damage was not limited to the roadway. Adjacent sidewalks were also affected, having been broken and damaged during the works, before being left in a deteriorated state without rehabilitation or repair. This further intensified residents’ frustration, particularly in a densely populated residential area.
Several neighborhood residents expressed their disappointment with the outcome of the works, considering what happened to be a “clear disregard” for their rights as citizens. They questioned the credibility of promises related to improving infrastructure, especially when roads and sidewalks are expected to be restored to their original condition immediately after the completion of works.
According to local actors, this incident raises fundamental questions about oversight and monitoring mechanisms for public works, the extent to which companies comply with their contractual obligations, and the responsibility of authorities supervising and accepting completed works despite evident shortcomings in quality.
Residents are calling on the competent authorities to intervene and compel the concerned company to repair the damage in accordance with required standards, while activating accountability mechanisms to prevent the recurrence of such practices, which undermine the image of public works and exacerbate citizens’ suffering.
The newspaper places this issue at the disposal of the territorial municipality, the competent authorities, and the company responsible for the works to provide clarifications regarding the matter. Any official response or statement received will be published in respect of the right of reply.
