Taounate — Local community actors report that residents of the Ain Aicha area have been enduring daily hardship for more than four years due to what they describe as an “environmental slaughterhouse” located directly in front of their homes, generating foul odors and ongoing pollution that threatens public health.
According to available information, this environmental black spot, situated within a residential area, has become a constant source of suffocating smells that seep into homes—so intense, residents say, that “breathing becomes impossible,” especially during hot periods.
The same sources confirmed that the problem is not limited to odors alone. It is also accompanied by a heavy spread of mosquitoes and insects, which has led to reported cases of skin diseases among several children, sparking widespread anger and discontent among affected families.
Local actors added that residents have filed multiple complaints with the relevant authorities over the past years, calling for the removal of this polluting facility or its reorganization in line with environmental standards. However, these appeals, they say, “fell on deaf ears,” amid the absence of any effective intervention by officials.
Residents are calling for urgent action by the competent authorities to put an end to this environmental disaster, in order to protect public health—especially that of children—and to safeguard their right to a healthy environment.
The newspaper places this issue at the disposal of local authorities and the concerned bodies in Ain Aicha to clarify their position, and it will publish any official response or clarification upon receipt, in respect of the right of reply.
