Dismantling of a Network Suspected of Using Artificial Intelligence to Defraud Families Seeking Holiday Rentals in Ifrane

Consistent media sources reported that coordination between the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Casablanca Criminal Court and elements of the Royal Gendarmerie in the Hraouiyine area led to the dismantling of a network suspected of involvement in fraud and scam cases using artificial intelligence techniques. The network allegedly targeted families and well-off individuals under the pretext of offering luxury holiday accommodations in the city of Ifrane.

According to these sources, one of the suspects was presented before the competent public prosecutor after being arrested in what was described as a well-executed operation, while investigations are ongoing to apprehend two other individuals—a young man and a young woman—suspected of links to the same network.

Available information suggests that members of the network presented themselves on social media as managers of a tourism company, before publishing digital advertisements featuring images and videos of luxury villas in Ifrane. These materials were reportedly produced using artificial intelligence techniques to convince victims of the credibility of the offers.

The same sources added that communication with prospective clients was conducted through a phone number displayed in the advertisements. Victims were asked to pay an advance deposit to confirm the booking, after which the location of the villa would be sent via instant messaging applications.

Media sources indicated that several victims were shocked upon arriving in Ifrane to discover that the locations provided bore no relation to reality. Some found themselves in front of ordinary homes owned by private citizens, while others were led to isolated sites or forested areas, forcing them to spend the night in what were described as difficult conditions.

According to the same sources, the arrest operation resulted in the seizure of identification documents suspected of being forged, which were allegedly used for travel and for withdrawing sums of money from bank branches. It was also reported that the arrested suspect was the subject of national wanted notices.

The sources further noted that among the victims was a well-known entrepreneur from Casablanca, who filed a complaint with the Royal Gendarmerie. Based on technical data, investigators were able to locate one of the suspects and lure him to an appointment that led to his arrest.

The media sources confirmed that investigations are continuing under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor to identify all potential accomplices and uncover the full scope of the case.

The newspaper emphasizes its respect for the presumption of innocence, noting that the above information is drawn from consistent media sources, pending the outcome of the ongoing judicial investigations.
